UOIT swept over the weekend despite a strong team effort

Women’s Hockey
Saturday - Laurier defeated UOIT 5-1
Sunday - Waterloo defeated UOIT 4-2

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team closed out the 2009 portion of their schedule with back-to-back home games this weekend. Although the Ridgebacks fought hard in both affairs, they would fail to pick up a check in the win column, falling to the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors.

The No. 2 nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks visited the Campus Ice Centre for the first time this season on Saturday night. Coming into the game with an undefeated record of 14-0-0, the Ridgebacks shocked the Golden Hawks when Meghan Steacy (Gananoque, Ont.) scored the game’s opening goal nine minutes into the first period, giving UOIT a 1-0 lead.

The early goal marked only the third time this season that the Golden Hawks have found themselves trailing in a game. The Ridgebacks would hold on to that lead for almost ten minutes, but Laurier managed to even things up with a late goal at the 18:16 minute mark, with the team’s heading into the break tied at one goal apiece.

After UOIT ran into penalty trouble early in the second period, Laurier would capitalize on their chances scoring two power play goals to take a 3-1 lead. The Golden Hawks would add on one more goal in the second period and an insurance marker in the third to win by a final score of 5-1.

UOIT welcomed the Waterloo Warriors to the dog pound on Sunday for game two of their weekend series. In what was a hard fought and entertaining game, a Ridgebacks comeback effort fell short as they lost by a final score of 4-2.

Waterloo wasted no time to get on the board as they scored just 11 second into the game. The Warriors would add another and took a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Ridgeback freshman Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) did all of the scoring for UOIT as she came up with her eighth and ninth goals of the season. Morillo’s second goal of the game came at the 8:56 mark of the third period to cut the Warrior lead to 3-2, but Waterloo’s captain Randi Lynn Wilson scored five minutes later to put the game on ice.

Morillo leads all OUA freshman in scoring with 13 points this season. With nine goals on the year, she also sits sixth overall in goals score (first in freshman).

UOIT’s power play continued to struggle over the weekend as they went 0-for-15 with the man advantage.

With the two losses, the Ridgebacks fall to 4-10-1 and are four points out of a playoff spot heading into the holiday break. The Ridgebacks next action is not until Thursday, January 7 when they travel to Guelph to take on the Gryphons at 7:30 p.m..
