Ridgebacks fall in a shootout against Mustangs – Playoff Date Set

Men’s Hockey: Western defeated UOIT 3-2 (shootout)

OSHAWA, Ont. – It took a shootout to break a 2-2 draw between the UOIT Ridgebacks and Western Mustangs in men’s hockey action Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre. In the end, it was Western skating away with two points as they defeated the Ridgebacks 3-2.

Although the Ridgebacks playoff opponent is to be determined, UOIT did learn that they will be hosting their first ever playoff game on Friday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m. The Ridgebacks will host Western or Waterloo, which will be determined at the end of the OUA regular season Saturday night.

The Ridgebacks will host Waterloo on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. puck drop) at the Campus Ice Centre for their final regular season home game. The Warriors are currently one point ahead of Western with each team having one game remaining. Waterloo defeated Windsor 4-3 in overtime Friday night.

UOIT had a determined effort on Friday night coming out with a lot of drive. The Ridgebacks out-hit and out-chanced the Mustangs for three periods but ran into a hot goalie as Keyvan Hunt stopped 39 of 41 Ridgebacks shots as well as both shootout attempts in the win. UOIT would out shoot Western 41-31 in the game.

Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) each had a goal and assist for UOIT in the loss. The duo is one-two in Ridgebacks scoring with 28 and 26 points respectively this season. Chris Purves (Scarborough, Ont.) and Scott Baker (Mactiar, Ont.) each picked up assists for UOIT.

The game featured only two power play opportunities for each team. Western went 1-for-2 with the man advantage while UOIT was 0-for-2. Goalie Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) made 29 saves for UOIT.

Friday night was Whitby Minor Hockey Appreciation night as well as the Durham Dodge Chrysler Jeep Bursary Giveaway at the Campus Ice Centre. Saturday night will be seniors night.
