Jason Guy doubles up on OUA west men’s hockey honours

HAMILTON, Ont. – UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey freshman goalie Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) has been named to the OUA west all-rookie team and an OUA west second team all-star.

Guy becomes the first player in UOIT Ridgebacks history to earn OUA all-star recognition, and the third Ridgeback to make the OUA all-rookie team, joining teammates Josh Varti (Barrie, Ont.) and Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) who earned the honour last season.

In his freshman season with UOIT, Guy established himself as the Ridgebacks number one goalie, making it a position of strength for the third year program. The team finished with an 11-15-2 (UOIT’s best record in three years) and made their first ever playoff appearance, almost eliminating the nationally ranked Western Mustangs.

“It is great to see Jason recognized by the OUA for his outstanding season,” said Ridgebacks head coach Marlin Muylaert. “After a four year career in the OHL, he was a much sought after student-athlete and we knew he would have an immediate impact for our team. Earning two awards is an excellent achievement and very fitting for the great season he had.”

Appearing in 24 games this season, Guy had a 3.74 goals against average with an .894 save percentage. He made 694 saves (second in the OUA western conference) and recorded two shutouts.

The engineering major seemed to perform best under pressure for the Ridgebacks. In a win over the nationally ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves (10/17), he made 51 saves. The following week against Waterloo (10/24), he stopped 30 of 32 Warrior shots in a 3-2 win.

In the Ridgebacks first ever OUA playoff appearance Guy made 36 saves against Western, leading UOIT to a 2-1 victory. He was also unbeatable in overtime this season posting a 3-0-1 overtime record.

The Ridgebacks will celebrate all of the athletic achievements of the 2009/10 season on Friday, April 8 at the 4th annual UOIT athletic banquet. The formal night will celebrate the many accomplishments of the UOIT Ridgebacks fourth season participating in the OUA.

The annual athletic banquet will include a wonderful dinner, VIP speakers, and of course the presentations of the year end team-by-team awards. The highlight of the night is the presentation and announcement of the UOIT Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
