Thunderwolves earn a series split with UOIT

Men’s Hockey: Lakehead defeated UOIT 8-2

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The UOIT men’s hockey team could not complete the weekend sweep over the nationally ranked Lakehead University on Saturday as the Thunderwolves defeated the Ridgebacks 8-2 at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont.

After earning two points against Lakehead in their two-game set, UOIT (10-15-1) enters the final weekend of the regular season two points ahead of the Brock Badgers (9-16-1) for the final playoff position in the OUA western conference (both teams have two games remaining). The Ridgebacks will look to close out the season on a strong note and clinch their first playoff berth in program history as they face-off against Western and Waterloo at home.

Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Scott Baker (Mactiar, Ont.) each picked up a goal and an assist for UOIT in the loss on Saturday, while Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) and TJ Legge (Chapleau, Ont.) recorded single assists.

The Lakehead offence was too much for UOIT as they went 3-for-3 on the power play and eventually put the game out of reach with three third period goals. Final shots in the game were 44-34 in favour of Lakehead.

UOIT will return to the Campus Ice Centre on Friday, February 12 against the Western Mustangs and then close out the regular season on Saturday, February 13 vs. the Waterloo Warriors. Game time for both games at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m. Both games are part of Whitby Minor Hockey weekend at the Dog Pound.
