Game On! Ridgebacks win in a shootout over the Guelph Gryphons

Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Guelph 3-2 (Shootout)

OSHAWA, Ont. – Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team a 3-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at the Campus Ice Centre Saturday night.

It was the Ridgebacks second win in as many nights as they defeated the nationally ranked Western Mustangs in London on Friday. Picking up four points in the standings this weekend moves the Ridgebacks (8-11-1) into a three-way tie for seventh place in the Western conference standings with the Brock Badgers (8-12-1) and Windsor Lancers (7-10-2). The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the OUA postseason.

In Saturday night’s game, Guelph and UOIT would trade late first period goals to head into the locker rooms tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes. Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) would score for UOIT in his first game back in the Ridgebacks lineup.

Guelph managed to take a 2-1 lead midway though the second period after Barrett Brook beat UOIT goalie Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) on a hard shot that found the top corner.

With time winding down on UOIT in the late stages of the third period, the Ridgebacks would catch a break as Kyle Wetering (Pickering, Ont.) scored at the 16:28 minute mark to tie the game at 2-2. On the goal, the puck would take an awkward bounce off the glass and slid past Guelph goalie Scott VanBommel, who was heading into the corner to play the puck.

The remainder of regulation and overtime would solve nothing as a shootout was needed to break the tie. UOIT’s Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) and Guelph’s Michael Kusy were the only goal scorers in the first three rounds, extending the shootout. Following a stop by Guy in the fifth round, Noyes would put the game on ice beating VanBommel, nailing down the Ridgebacks second straight victory.

Guy recorded his seventh win of the year for UOIT making 23 stops. In his freshmen season, Guy holds a 7-9-1 record in conference play.

In the Ridgebacks two wins this weekend, Wetering picked up three goals and an assist, including the game winning goal against Western and the game tying goal against Guelph.

Tonight’s win also marked Marlin Muylaert’s first victory over his former squad. Muylaert coached Guelph for 11 seasons from 1988-89 to 1998-99 where he had a 188-114-20 overall record. Prior to tonight’s game, UOIT was 0-7-1 against the Gryphons.

The Ridgebacks next action will be on the road next weekend as they take on the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night followed by a rematch with the Western Mustangs at the John Labbat Centre on Saturday.
