Ridgebacks lose an overtime thriller in Toronto

Women’s Hockey: Toronto defeated UOIT 6-5 (OT)

TORONTO - The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team lost a 6-5 overtime thriller against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After a three goal third period outburst by the Ridgebacks giving them a 5-4 lead, Brenley Jorgenson of the Varsity Blues would tie the game with three seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. In OT, Annie DelGuidice tipped a shot past UOIT goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) with only 51 seconds left to give Toronto the comeback victory. 

Meghan Steacy (Gananoque, Ont.) led the charge for the Ridgebacks, recording UOIT’s first ever hat-trick. Steacy would score two goals in the first period followed by the game tying goal in the third period, netting her a piece of UOIT history. Kara Carter (Whitby, Ont.) would also have a multi-point game with two assists on the night.

Heading into the third period trailing by two goals, UOIT dominated took over the game out shooting the Varsity Blues 28-7, setting a Ridgebacks record for most shots in a period. The team would capitalize on their opportunities as Steacy, Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.) and Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) all scored third period tallies to give UOIT the short lived lead.

Finals shots in the game were 47-46 in favour of UOIT. The 47 shot performance was UOIT’s highest shot output in program history.

UOIT’s power play unit had their most efficient game of the year scoring three goals on eight opportunities while Toronto went 1-for-9 with the man advantage. Coming into the game in relief, Thompson made 12 stops for UOIT while allowing two goals.

UOIT is now 4-11-3 on the year, trailing Windsor (6-13-0) by one point for ninth place in the standings.

UOIT will be back in action at home on Friday, January 22 against Brock University (7:30 p.m.). Oshawa Lady Generals day will take place on Saturday, January 23 as the Ridgebacks take on the Guelph Gryphons at 3:30 p.m.
