Warriors slip past Ridgebacks in the third period

Men’s Hockey: Waterloo defeated UOIT 4-3

WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT men’s hockey team winning streak came to an end on Friday night as the Waterloo Warriors edged out the Ridgebacks 4-3 at the Columbia Ice Field.

UOIT came out of a wild first period that featured 31 shots up by two goals, as Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) scored just over one minute apart midway through the period.

Momentum seemed to shift to begin the second period as the Warriors scored two quick goals to tie the game at 2-2. The teams would trade goals to during the remainder of the period, to remain tied heading into the third. Vatri would score his second goal of the night, bringing his team leading point total to 23.

In the final stanza, the teams continued to battle hard looking to break the tie and earn two points in the standings. At the 15:07 minute mark, Waterloo freshman Aaron Lewicki did just that as he scored his fourth goal of the year to put the Warriors ahead 4-3. The Ridgebacks had a number of great scoring chances in the final minutes, but Waterloo goaltender John Zelenbaba stopped all 11 shots in the period to preserve the win.

UOIT goalie Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) made 51 stops in the loss. The Ridgebacks chased Waterloo starting goalie Keaton Hartigan from the game after scoring three goals on 19 shots. Winning goalie Zelenbaba stopped all 12 shots he faced coming in on relief.

The Ridgebacks (8-12-1) are tied with the Windsor Lancers (7-10-3) for the final playoff position in the Western Conference. The two teams will lock horns next Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre. The Brock Badgers (9-12-1) moved ahead of the two teams with a 6-5 upset over the Western Mustangs (17-4-0).

The Ridgebacks will head to London, Ont. on Saturday night as they meet up with Western in the Jack Frost Cup at the John Labatt Centre. The Ridgebacks defeated the nationally ranked Mustangs last weekend in London, snapping their 16 game winning streak.
