Ridgebacks frostbit in London

Men’s Hockey: Western defeated UOIT 4-1

LONDON, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks could not come up with a repeat performance against the nationally ranked Western Mustangs as they were defeated 4-1 in the third annual Jack Frost Cup. Saturday’s game was played in front of over 1,800 fans at the John Labatt Centre.

After having their 16 game winning streak broken by UOIT last week, the Mustangs looked as if they had something to prove in the rematch as they scored the first three goals of the game, while limited the Ridgebacks opportunities.

Down 3-0 in the third period, UOIT showed some signs of life as Scott Baker (Mactiar, Ont.) scored an unassisted shorthanded goal to cut the lead to two goals. Baker has 12 points this season to lead all UOIT freshmen in scoring.

UOIT continued to play in the Mustang’s end, but Western goalie Keyvan Hunt stopped the remaining Ridgeback shots to preserve the 4-2 win, after Western added an empty net goal.

Hunt would make 17 saves in the win while his Ridgeback counterpart, Jason Guy ( Whitby, Ont.), stopped 35 of 38 Western shots. Both power plays were ineffective on the night as UOIT went 0-for-4 and Western went 0-for-6.

UOIT slips to 8-13-1 this season, but are still in the thick of the playoff race. Windsor (7-10-4) sits one point ahead of UOIT for the final playoff spot in the Western conference, after picking up a point against York on Saturday. The Lancers will pay a visit to the Campus Ice Centre on Friday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. in a match that will have playoff implications on the line.

The Brock Badgers (9-13-1) sit two points ahead of UOIT for seventh place, with the Ridgebacks holding a game in hand. Brock fell to Lakehead 2-1 on Saturday.
