UOIT stumbles against Windsor – Ridgebacks still in the playoff hunt

Men’s Hockey: Windsor defeated UOIT 6-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Windsor Lancers five goal outburst in the third period propelled them to a 6-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team on Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre.

Despite the loss, UOIT (8-14-1) remains only two points out of a playoff position with two games in hand on the Brock Badgers (9-15-1), who went 0-2 this past week. The Ridgebacks will look for a win at home on Saturday, January 30 as they take on the York Lions ( 11-10-2) at 7:30 p.m.

In Friday’s contest, Windsor broke open the scoreless draw at the 8:52 mark of the second period as Scott Gillis scored his fifth goal of the year on the power play, beating starting goalie Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.).

The score remained 1-0 heading into the third period, where Windsor would then go on a tear scoring four goals in the first six minutes of the period to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

UOIT veteran Dusting Turner (Charlottetown, PEI) scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Kyle Wetering (Pickering, Ont.) and Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) at the 6:56 mark of the third, but the five goal lead was to big to overcome as Windsor skated to a 6-1 victory.

Brett Oliphant of the Lancers had two goals and two assists in the win while teammate Mark Thorburn had two goals and one assist.
