Ridgebacks and York face off in a low scoring affair – Big game tomorrow night

Men’s Hockey: York defeated UOIT 2-1
Next Home Game: Friday, January 8 vs. Guelph (7:30 p.m.) – Campus Ice Centre

NORTH YORK, Ont. – Fans at the Canlan Ice Sports arena in North York were treated to a great game on Thursday night as the York Lions squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team.

Both goaltenders were outstanding making a number of great saves over the course of the game. David Davenport of the Lions stopped 32 Ridgebacks shots in the win while Jason Guy ( Whitby, Ont.) made 33 saves for UOIT.

After a scoreless first period, the Lions managed to score two second period goals to take a 2-0 lead. The two York goals were overshadowed in the period, as the Ridgebacks were on the wrong end of six straight penalties, including game misconducts given out to Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) and Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.).

With two of their top players out of the game, the Ridgebacks showed a lot of fight in the third period and were able to cut the Lion lead to just one as TJ Legge (Chapleau, Ont.) scored his first goal of the season.

With the Ridgebacks charging looking to tie up the score, Davenport managed to stop the rest of the UOIT 10 shots in the period to secure the 2-1 victory.

UOIT falls to 6-10-1 on the year and remain one point out of a playoff spot in the OUA Western conference. The team they are trailing, the University of Guelph, is in Oshawa Friday night for a pivotal match-up for both clubs. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
