Ridgebacks fall to the nationally ranked Gryphons to open up 2010

Women’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 7-2

GUELPH, Ont. – The nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons scored five second period goals enroute to a 7-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team on Thursday night.

Following a Ridgebacks late first period goal to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, the Gryphons took control of the game scoring five unanswered second period goals to go up 5-1 and  eventually secure another checkmark in the win column.

UOIT freshman Jill Morillo ( Whitby, Ont.) was able to add to her impressive totals scoring a goal and an assist, as she continues to lead all OUA rookies in scoring (16) and goals (10). 2008-09 UOIT leading scorer Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored UOIT’s other goal in the losing effort.

The Gryphons controlled the flow of the game out shooting UOIT 30-11. Guelph went 1-for-7 with the man advantage while UOIT was 0-for-3.

The win snaps Guelph’s two game losing streak as they sit in a tie for third place with York in the OUA conference standings. UOIT dropped their fifth straight decision as they fall to 4-11-1 on the year.

The Ridgebacks will look to bounce back from the loss on Saturday afternoon as they travel to St. Catharines for a matinee affair against Brock (3 p.m.). UOIT is 1-0 against the Badgers this season but are trailing Brock by a single point in the conference standings.
