Ridgebacks fall short against Guelph at the Campus Ice Centre

Men’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 5-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team lost their third straight game as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Guelph Gryphons at the Campus Ice Centre Friday night.

The losing streak comes after the Ridgebacks tied the program record for most goals in a game in an 8-0 victory over Brock. UOIT’s offence has been cold as of late scoring just two goals in the past three games.

With both teams coming out of the gate with a lot of intensity, the Gryphons managed to open up scoring midway through the first period as Edward Gale notched his fifth goal of the year. Guelph would add one more goal late in the first period as Matt Lyall scored on the power play, giving the Gryphons a 2-0 lead.

The second period featured plenty of power play opportunities with ten minor penalties called, but both teams were left off the scoresheet as goaltenders Jason Guy ( Whitby, Ont.) and Scott VanBommel shut the door.

Shortly after Guelph took a 3-0 lead in the third period, the Ridgebacks would get on the board as Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) scored his fifth goal of the year. Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) and Dustin Turner (Charlottetown, PEI) picked up assists on the play.

Holding off a UOIT comeback, the Gryphons would add two more insurance markers to close out the game giving them a 5-1 victory.

Guy made 24 stops in net for UOIT in the losing effort while VanBommel made 21 saves for his second win of the year. UOIT was 0-for-8 on the power play and Guelph was 2-of-6.

Guelph (7-9-2) is now three points ahead of the Ridgebacks (6-11-1) in the conference standings. UOIT remains in the postseason chase sitting two points behind the Windsor Lancers (6-8-3) for the last playoff spot.

The Gryphons have dominated the series against Ridgebacks over the first three years of the program as UOIT is 0-7-1 all-time against Guelph. The teams will meet up next Saturday night for the final time this season. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
