Badgers edge UOIT in overtime

Women’s Hockey: Brock defeated UOIT 2-1 (OT)

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Freshman Shannon McLeod of the Brock University women’s hockey team scored at the 2:06 minute mark of overtime to defeat the UOIT Ridgebacks 2-1 in St. Catharines, Ont. on Saturday.

The season series between the two teams is now tied, as the Ridgebacks defeated Brock 3-2 earlier in the season.

Despite getting outshot 8-5 in the first period, the Badgers would get out to the early lead as Kelly Walker scored with 28 seconds left in the period.

UOIT managed to bounce back on the power play in the second period, as Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.) scored her second goal of the year, knotting the game up at one goal apiece. Chrissy Tereshyn ( Scarborough, Ont.) picked up an assist on the play.

UOIT goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) made 17 stops in the second period, keeping the Badgers with the lone first period goal.

The teams played the third period much more conservatively as the teams combined for only 11 shots, needing overtime to break the tie.

In the extra frame, McLeod lifted the Badgers to victory beating Thompson on an unassisted effort at the 2:06 minute mark.

Thompson would end up making 27 saves in net for UOIT, while Badgers goalie Beth Clause stopped 27 of 28 Ridgebacks attempts.

The Badgers improve 5-10-2 on the year while the Ridgebacks fall to 4-12-1. UOIT has dropped six straight games and are now eight points out of a playoff spot.

The Ridgebacks will look to get back in the win column next weekend on a road swing against Toronto and York.
