Wetering notches a hat-trick in a Ridgebacks 6-4 victory over Brock

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Kyle Wetering netted a hat-trick including the game-winning goal for the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team in a 6-4 victory over the Brock Badgers Wednesday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines.

Wetering’s (Pickering, Ont.) three goal performance marked only the second time in Ridgebacks history that a player has recorded a hat-trick, with captain Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.) the only other player to do so in last year’s home finale.

Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) tied a Ridgeback record on Wednesday night for scoring the most points in a game, recording two goals and two assists in the team’s second straight conference win.

The first twenty minutes featured the two rivals trading goals throughout the period, with UOIT managing to take a 3-2 lead into intermission. Spaling, Wetering and Scott Baker (Mactier, Ont.) scored for UOIT, giving the Ridgebacks a one goal lead.

Five minutes into the second period, Wetering would score his second goal of the night, one that would chase Brock’s starting goalie Mark Yetman out of the game. The Badger’s goalie change seemed to spark the team’s offence, as they scored the next two goals to even the game up at four goals apiece after two periods.

In the final stanza, Wetering would complete the hat-trick scoring at the 5:39 mark, giving UOIT a 5-4 lead. Spaling would add an empty net goal, his fourth point of the night with just over thirty seconds left on the clock, securing the Ridgebacks victory.

Baker would finish with three points in the game, with a goal and two assists while teammates Jeff Barletta (Port Stanley, Ont.), Mike Ball (Unionville, Ont.) and Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) all had two assists. Vatri now has 12 points in eight games this season and is second in OUA league scoring.

UOIT did a great job of controlling the flow of the game as they outshot Brock 33-19. The Eastern conference’s second ranked offence went 3-for-9 on the power play while the Badgers were shutout going 0-for-8.

Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) picked up his third win in net for UOIT, making 15 stops. Jordan Bent, who came in relief for Brock was handed the loss despite stopping 17 of 18 Ridgeback shots.

The win is the second straight for the Ridgebacks, pushing their conference record to 3-5-0 while the loss puts Brock at 5-4-0 in league play this season.

The teams have one win a piece in the season series, with their final match up against one another set to take place on Saturday, November 7 in Oshawa. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
