Ridgebacks drop a 3-2 decision to York in women’s hockey

Women’s Hockey: York defeated UOIT 3-2

NORTH YORK, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team dropped their second game in as many days as they were defeated by the York Lions 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in North York.

After UOIT and York had picked up losses on Saturday, both teams looked determined to split their weekend set and get back to .500. In a very close match, the Lions were able to pick up the win edging out the Ridgebacks for the one goal victory.

After a lone first period York goal by Katrina Tollis, UOIT stormed back in the second as Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) picked up her second goal of the year, assisted by Shantel Brown (Gravenhurst, Ont.) five minutes into the period. Two minutes later, Brown would once again get on the scoresheet picking up her first goal of the campaign, assisted by Meagan Steacy (Gananoque, Ont.) giving UOIT a 2-1 lead.

Later in the period, York would reclaim the lead with two quick goals of their own as Chloe Molano and Jennifer Petkovics scored to close out the second, putting the Lions up 3-2.

Both teams would have plenty of chances in the third period, but outstanding goaltending prevented either team from scoring as York skated off with the one goal victory.

The teams played a level game, with shots ending up 33-31 in favour of York. Sydney McMurter made 29 stops in net for the win while Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) made 30 saves for UOIT in the losing effort. UOIT was shutout on the power play going 0-for-6 while York was 2-for-9.

The Ridgebacks will return to Oshawa for the 2009-10 home opener, scheduled for Saturday, October 17 vs. the Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
