Ridgebacks pull out a thrilling 6-5 shootout win

Men's Hockey: UOIT defeated Lakehead 6-5 (SO)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men's hockey team pulled out an important win on Saturday as they defeated Lakehead University 6-5 in a shootout to split their weekend series at the Campus Ice Centre.

”It was a big win for our team tonight,” said UOIT head coach Marlin Muylaert. “The boys really deserved this one and fought hard the entire game. It was great to come out with the two points.”

After allowing a quick first goal just two minutes into the game, the Ridgebacks stormed back with two of their own to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Tony Rizzi ( Kingston , Ont.) scored on the power play while Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) gave the Ridgebacks the lead shorthanded.

Midway through the second period, the Ridgebacks would net back-to-back goals in a one minute span to take a commanding 4-1 lead. Jeremy Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) notched his fourth goal of the year while captain Derrick Bagshaw ( Oshawa , Ont.) scored his second of the season.

Late in the second period, UOIT would run into some bad luck. After a questionable double-minor call by the official, the Thunderwolves would cut the lead in half with a power play marker. In the next minute in a half, Lakehead would add on two more goals to tie the game at 4-4, stunning the home faithful.

The third period featured both teams at their best with hopes of picking up the win. Lakehead would take a 5-4 lead six minutes into the third period, but Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) would tie the game back up with seven minutes to go. The teams would go scoreless for the remainder of the game including overtime, sending it into a shootout.

In the shootout, Rizzi would score on the Ridgebacks first attempt with a slapshop from the hashmarks, giving UOIT a 1-0 lead. Rizzi's opening goal was all that is all the team would need as goaltender Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) stopped all three Thunderwolves attempts to secure the team's first regular season win.

Guy had a great game for UOIT, making a number of clutch saves to keep the team alive. Offensively, Whelan would end up with a goal and two assists while Vatri, Bagshaw and Varty all picked up a goal and an assist.

The Ridgebacks will be back in action on Thursday night as they take on the York Lions (0-3-0) on the road. The Ridgebacks will return home on Saturday, October 24 for a match against the Waterloo Warriors (3-0-1). Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
