Ridgebacks pick up a split women's hockey action

Women's Hockey
Saturday: Guelph defeated UOIT 3-1
Sunday: UOIT defeated Brock 3-2

OSHAWA, Ont. – After dropping their home opener 3-1 against the University of Guelph on Saturday night, the UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey team picked up a 3-2 victory over the Brock Badgers to go 1-1 over weekend play.

”Today's game was a great team effort after a difficult loss to Guelph the night before,” said Karen Nystrom, UOIT head coach. “I am very proud of the effort and 'team' character seen throughout the entire 60 minutes.”

Meghan Steacy led the Ridgebacks in scoring on Sunday as she scored two goals, including the game winner with five minutes left in the third period.

Jessica Larabie made her second consecutive start in net for UOIT, making 30 stops for her first OUA victory.

”Defensively, it was our best performance of the season; confident and composed defensive play was lead by Jordan Whately and Kara Carter,” said Nystrom. “The team showed a great deal of discipline and aggressiveness with our fore-check and showed a great deal of offensive finesse.  Once again, we had solid goaltending all of which combined, resulted in our first win of the season.”

Both teams were shutout on the power play with Brock going 0-for-9 and UOIT going 0-for-11. UOIT outshoot Brock 43-42.

UOIT will have the week off and will be back in action on Friday, October 30 against the Western Mustangs. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.
