Lions hold off the Ridgebacks in North York

Men’s Hockey: York defeated UOIT 5-4

NORTH YORK, Ont. – Scoring a goal and an assist against York University on Thursday night, Jeremy Whelan of the UOIT men’s hockey team extended his league high goal scoring streak to five games. In the end, it wasn’t enough as the Lions skated to a 5-4 victory over the Ridgebacks.

Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) has been on an offensive tear to start the 2009-10 season, scoring five goals and three assists in the Ridgebacks first six games. Whelan currently leads the OUA in both points (8) and goals (5) to start off this young season.

Six minutes into the first period on Thursday night, Whelan recorded his fifth goal in as many games as he beat York goaltender David Davenport to open up the scoring.

York would tie things up later in the first period and break things wide open in the second, scoring four goals to take a 5-1 lead.

Playing with a “refuse to lose” attitude, the Ridgebacks would climb back into the game with goals from Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) and a pair from Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.), to cut the York lead to just one. Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up a pair of assists on the goals to bring his season point total to six this year.

The Ridgebacks looked for the equalizer in the late stages of the game, but came up just short of the miracle comeback as the Lions came out with the 5-4 win.

Jesse Grespan and Tyler Harrison each had three point nights in the Lions victory.

Davenport would turn aside 25 Ridgeback shots in the win, while his counterpart Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) made 44 stops for UOIT. The Lions were 2-for-8 on the power play while UOIT was 1-for-6.

The Ridgebacks (1-5-0) will return to the Campus Ice Centre on Saturday, October 24 for a game against the Waterloo Warriors (3-0-1). Puck drop for summer tennis camp night is at 7:30 p.m.
