Badgers spoil Ridgebacks home opener

Men’s Hockey: Brock defeated UOIT 3-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – Brock University spoiled the party at the Campus Ice Centre on Saturday night as the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team opened up their 2009-10 season with a 3-1 loss to the Badgers.

In what was a very entertaining game, Brock goaltender Mark Yetman stole the show making 21 stops including nine in the third period to preserve the win.

Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) was the Ridgebacks lone goal scorer, as he gave UOIT a 1-0 lead early in the second period with an unassisted goal.

The Badgers would bounce back with three unanswered goals, scoring one goal in the second period and two more in the third. Brock sophomore Derek Brochu scored two goals and an assist to lead the charge while freshman Vince Scott scored the game winner just 58 seconds into the third period.

Jason Guy ( Whitby, Ont.) made 19 saves for UOIT in his Ridgebacks debut.

It was a special night at the Campus Ice Centre as the Ridgebacks welcomed Toronto Maple Leafs legend Bobby Baun who took part in the opening ceremony.

UOIT will look to regroup with an exhibition game on Sunday in Erie, PA as the Ridgebacks take on Mercyhurst College. The team’s next home game is scheduled for Friday, October 16 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is at 7:30 p.m.
