Ridgebacks in tough against the defending ECAC Champs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team finished game one of their “Ivy League Showdown” on the losing end of a 8-0 decision against the Yale University Bulldogs on Friday night.

The Bulldogs, defending ECAC Hockey champions, enter the season ranked seventh in the national collegiate hockey rankings, which includes a first place vote for being the top team in the country.

Denny Kearney and Charles Brockett each had two goals and Broc Little added three assists as Yale raced past the Ridgebacks before 2,263 at Ingalls Rink.

The Bulldogs outshot the Ridgebacks 48-21 while scoring on four of eight man-advantages. Six different players lit the lamp for Yale and their two goalies combined for 21 saves. Freshman Nick Maricic, who split the game with junior Ryan Rondeau, stopped all 12 shots he saw over the first 30 minutes. UOIT would test Rondeau with tough shots in the third before finishing with nine stops.

The Bulldogs jumped all over an early two-man advantage with Kearney hitting the net twice from the same spot at the goal line extended. The junior wing found a rebound a few feet from the right post and tucked it behind Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) (40 saves) just 1:41 into the first period. Dawson saw 24 shots in the opening frame.

Kearney had the puck on his stick a minute later and snuck it past the UOIT goalie with the Bulldogs still on the man-advantage.

The first-period scoring spree for Yale continued as the Ridgebacks could not clear the puck from their own zone. Mark Arcobello slipped a puck under Dawson at 6:41 to make it 3-0. Brockett converted a great Little feed at 11:08 to bump it to 4-0. Brendan Mason added his name to the scoring list when he converted a nice feed from Chad Ziegler with 2:33 left in the frame.

The Bulldogs did not let up in the second, though it took a while to find the net again. Brockett's second came at 10:30 on a nifty backhander from the low slot. Shortly after, the home team connected a pretty pair of passes that ended up on the stick of newcomer Antoine Laganiere, whose shot from the low slot went inside the left post. Andrew Miller one-timed a Laganiere crossing feed midway through the third to make it 8-0.

The Ridgebacks will travel to Brown University for a match-up against the Bears on Saturday night.
