Western pulls out a third-period comeback win over UOIT

Women’s Hockey: Western defeated UOIT 5-3

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team held the lead three times on Friday night but could not come away with a win, losing 5-3 to the Western Ontario Mustangs at the Campus Ice Centre.

After falling behind 3-2 early in the third period, Western mounted a comeback led by Whitby native Ellie Seedhouse, as the Mustangs galloped to their second victory of the season.

Seedhouse would finish the night with two goals and an assist, bringing her season point total to nine, putting her second in OUA scoring.

Whitby was well represented on the night as freshmen Jill Morillo and Sarah Worthington, both of which are from the Town of the Marigold, each recorded a goal and assist for the Ridgebacks. Worthington’s one timer in the third period gave UOIT a 3-2 lead, their third of the game. Sarah Matthews (Oshawa, Ont.) was the other UOIT goal scorer on the night.

In the Ridgebacks first five game to start the season, Morillo leads the team in goals (4) and points (5).

Jessica Larabie (Pickering, Ont.) started in net for UOIT making 31 stops in the losing effort. Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) of Western made 22 saves for her second win. UOIT was 0-for-4 on the power play while Western went 1-for-7.

Saturday night (Halloween) will be a “thriller” at the Campus Ice Centre as the Ridgebacks take on the Windsor Lancers at 7:30 p.m.
