Ridgebacks wrap up preseason in Ottawa

Women’s Hockey
Game One: Ottawa defeated UOIT 4-2
Game Two: Carleton defeated UOIT 2-1

OTTAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team closed out preseason action this weekend with two road games in Ottawa. Despite a strong effort, the Ridgebacks fell short in the nation’s capital, picking up losses in both exhibition games.

In a penalty filled game on Saturday against the University of Ottawa, the Ridgebacks fell by a final score of 4-2.

UOIT would fall behind early as Ottawa scored two first period power play goals, however, the Ridgebacks would fight back with a power play marker of their own, as freshman Jillian Morillo scored to cut the lead in half.

In the second period, UOIT would find themselves in the box once again taking 14 minutes of penalties, with the Gee Gee’s scoring twice to take a 4-1 lead into the third. Jaclyn Gibson would score a third period goal for UOIT, but it just wasn’t enough as Ottawa skated away with the 4-2 win.

”Ottawa came out with great energy, speed and strong, physical puck pursuit,” said UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom. “We had a solid effort by our penalty killing unit, which allowed us to stay in the game and have a shot at a possible comeback”

Against Carleton on Sunday, the Ridgebacks would find themselves down early once again.  Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the team fought through the adversity, inspired by the solid goaltending of Jessica Larabie as she stopped a total of 48 shots. Jillian Morillo would notch her second goal of the weekend, cutting the Ravens lead in half. UOIT would have several good attempts to tie the game up, but they could not find a way to score as Carleton picked up the 2-1 win.

”Our team showed great character throughout the 2nd and 3rd period,” said Nystrom. “We were threatening to tie the game on a number of occasions; but once again, we found ourselves killing too many penalties.”

UOIT will look forward to open up their 2009-10 regular season on the road against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, October 10 (4 p.m.).

The Ridgebacks home opener is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 vs. the Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at 3:30 p.m.
