Ridgebacks fall to the Gryphons in Guelph’s home opener

Men’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 8-5

GUELPH, Ont. – Making his OUA debut, Thomas Kiriakou of the University of Guelph scored four goals and an assist to lead the Gryphons to a 8-5 victory over UOIT in OUA men’s hockey on Tuesday night.

Tony Rizzi ( Kingston, Ont.) would open up scoring for UOIT just over two minutes into the game on a power play, but Guelph would bounce back with three first period goals of their own to take a 3-1 lead.

There was no shortage of goals in the second frame as UOIT would once again get off to a quick start as Rizzi netted his second goal of the night followed by Steve Spade’s (Rochester, NY) first goal of the year to tie the game at 3-3 just four minutes into the period.

Guelph would reply just two minutes following the Ridgebacks outburst to make it 4-3, but UOIT would once again claw back with a goal of their own as Jeremy Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) scored to tie the game back up four goals apiece.

Later in the period, Kiriakou would take the game over as he netted his third and fourth goal of the game, giving Guelph a 6-4 lead heading into the third period.

Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) would cut the Guelph lead to one goal just over a minute into the third, but the Gryphons would add two insurance markers in the late stages of the game to pull out the victory in their home opener.

The Ridgebacks went 1-for-5 on the power play and were out shot 54-29. Guelph would finish the night 2-for-7 with the man advantage.

Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) was in net for UOIT making 46 saves while Matt Smith of the Gryphons recorded the win making 24 saves.

Marlin Muylaert has not had much luck against his former team in the three year history of the Ridgebacks program, as UOIT is 0-6-1 all-time against the Gryphons.

UOIT will look for their first conference victory of the year as they head to Waterloo on Saturday, October 10 to take on Laurier. Game time against the nationally ranked Golden Hawks is at 7:30 p.m.

The Ridgebacks next home action is slated for October 16 and 17 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre on Friday is at 7:30 p.m. followed with a game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
