Ridgebacks pick up an experienced defenceman

OSHAWA, Ont. – University of Ontario Institute of Technology men's hockey head coach Marlin Muylaert is proud to announce the addition of Matt Pasztor to the Ridgebacks lineup for the 2010/11 season. A native of Langton, Ont., the 6'2 defenceman has played four years of junior hockey and is ready to make the leap to the University level.

"We are excited about adding Matt to our blueline,” said Muylaert. “He is a defenceman that can bring a physical presence to our lineup while having also shown the ability to contribute to a power play.  Everyone we have talked to about Matt feels he has a great upside and we are confident he will prove to be an excellent University hockey player."

Pasztor was a workhorse for Grande Prairie of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 2009/10, playing in all 69 games for the Storm, including nine playoff games. In 60 regular season games, Pasztor recorded 22 points, second highest of any defencemen on the team. The Storm finished with a 40-17-1-2 regular season record and advanced to the North division semi-finals.

Prior to going out west, Pasztor played one season with the Aurora Tigers of the OPJHL (2008/09) and two seasons with the St. Thomas Stars in the Western Ontario Hockey League (WOHL). The blueliner was a regular member of the Tigers power play unit, which averaged over a goal per game that season. In the playoffs, Pasztor recorded four points in their second round series against Huntsville, including scoring the winning goal in game two.

Playing in the WOHL from 2006/07 to 2007/08, Pasztor played in 91 games throughout the regular season, recording 55 points, 26 of which were on the power play.

Pasztor was also selected by Mississauga in the 2005 Ontario Hockey League draft.

The Ridgebacks have had success recruiting players from the WOHL, as 2008/09 OUA all-rookie Mike Noyes played for the St. Mary Lincolns where he was the Caley Cup player of the year.
