Payne’s hat-trick sinks the Ridgebacks
OUA Men’s Hockey: Ryerson defeated UOIT 5-4 (OT)
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams stunned the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday night coming back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Ridgebacks 5-4 in overtime at the Campus Ice Centre.
Greg Payne led the comeback charge for Ryerson as he recorded a hat-trick, including scoring the game tying and winning goal.
UOIT got off to a great start as Michael Montgomery recorded the quickest goal in Ridgebacks history as he scored just 11 seconds into the game.
That seemed to set the tone for UOIT over the next twenty minutes as they scored three more goals to take a 4-0 lead.
Kevin George scored two goals while Brendan Wise had the other. James Woodcroft had two assists in the Ridgebacks flurry of first period markers.
Ryerson would stay in the game and chip away at the lead, scoring one goal in the second period and two quick goals midway through the third period to get within one.
With less than a minute left in the game, Payne beat UOIT goaltender Jeff Dawson to tie the game up at 4-4, stunning the hometown crowd.
With all of the momentum on their side, the Rams would complete the improbable comeback as Payne scored the game winner at the 3:33 minute mark.
UOIT finishes the 2011 portion of their conference schedule with a 3-14-1 record. Despite the team’s struggles in the first half of the season, they are only two points behind Laurier who holds onto the final playoff position.
Laurier and the Ridgebacks faceoff twice in 2012.
