Ridgebacks earn an Atlantic sweep with a win over Dalhousie

CIS Women’s Hockey – UOIT defeated Dalhousie 5-1 *Exhibition Game

HALIFAX - The UOIT Ridgebacks picked up an Atlantic Canada sweep on Friday night as they earned a 5-1 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers in CIS women’s hockey action.

The Ridgebacks went 2-0 in their two-game exhibition series in Halifax, as they defeated the St. Mary’s Huskies by the same score on Thursday.

“The team played well in three zones tonight,” said UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom. “We played a complete game bringing an end to a great trip down east. It was excellent for team building as we had a great experience with great results.”

UOIT got off to a quick start scoring just nine seconds into the game as Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) beat Dalhousie goaltender Brittany McMacken.

Kayla Jardine (Toronto, Ont.) would add one more goal in the period for UOIT as the team skated into the break with a 2-0 lead.

UOIT would double up their lead in the second period as Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.) and Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) each found the back of the net.

The Tigers would eventually break up UOIT goaltender Emma Thompson’s (Hastings, Ont.) bid at a shutout scoring with just over seven minutes left in the game.

However, Gillian Morgan (Ajax, Ont.) would put an end to the Tigers comeback as she added another insurance marker for the Ridgebacks to give them the four goal victory.

Palmateer had an assist on Morgan's third period goal, giving the Ridgebacks senior two points on the night to lead all scorers.

UOIT outshot Dalhousie 25-15 as Thompson made 14 saves in the win. Both teams went scoreless with the man advantage.

The Ridgebacks will head home on a two-game winning streak as they look to make a run at their first OUA playoff appearance.

“The team is looking to carry this momentum forward into the second half of the season,” said Nystrom. “It all begins with our game Friday night at Queen’s.”
