UOIT drops a 3-1 decision to Guelph
OUA Men’s Hockey: Guelph defeated UOIT 3-1
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team missed a golden opportunity to get within striking distance of a playoff position on Thursday night as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Guelph Gryphons at the Campus Ice Centre.
UOIT (4-17-1) remains four points behind the eighth place Laurier Golden Hawks (6-13-1). Even though the regular season is winding down for UOIT, playoffs are still within reach as the team has two games against Laurier, including their next home game on Friday, January 27.
Jacob Rattie made his second straight start in between the pipes for UOIT and he made 33 stops. The Niagara Falls native had 46 saves in an upset win over the No. 7 Lakehead Thunderwolves in his first OUA start.
With UOIT trailing 2-0 in the second period, Ridgeback freshman Jesse Stoughton of Bobcaygeon scored his fourth of the year to cut the Gryphons lead in half. Luke VanMoerkerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.) and Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) picked up assists on the power play goal, extending both of their scoring streaks to four games.
Stoughton’s goal would be the only one allowed by Guelph goaltender Cody St. Jacques (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) as the Gryphons skated away with the 3-1 victory.
Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored two goals for Guelph while teammate Kris Belan (Florence, Ont.) had the game winner.
Both teams scored one goal on the power play goal as Guelph was 1-for-5 and UOIT was 1-for-7. UOIT outshot Guelph 39-36.
The Ridgebacks will conclude weekend action on Saturday, January 21 against the York Lions (10-8-3). Game time in Toronto is 7 p.m.
