Vatri becomes the first Ridgeback to score 100 career points

OUA Men’s Hockey: York defeated UOIT 5-3

NORTH YORK, Ont. – Despite UOIT men’s hockey senior Josh Vatri recording his 100th career point on Saturday night, the Ridgebacks were unable to come up with a victory as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the York Lions.

Playing in his 99th conference game, the Barrie native picked up two assists to give him 101 career points. Vatri becomes the first Ridgeback to reach the milestone mark.

As the Lions celebrated 50 years of York men’s hockey, fans in attendance were treated to a wild game.

York would take a 3-1 lead after scoring three goals in the second period. Three goals were scored between the two teams in just over a one minute span late in the period.

The scoring frenzy would continue early in the third as Luke VanMoerkerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.) notched a power play goal just eight seconds into the period for UOIT.

York managed to quickly bounce back and regain their two-goal advantage as Evan Gravenor scored his sixth of the season just 17 seconds after VanMoerkerke’s goal. The teams would trade goals to close out the third period as York picked up win.

Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) and Vatri would each end up with two assists in the game. Noyes extends his point scoring streak to five games and as he sits in seventh in OUA defensive scoring with 19 points this year.

James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) and Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) were the goal scorers for UOIT.

Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) made his first appearance in net for UOIT in 2012. He allowed four goals on 29 shots and was replace by Jacob Rattie (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who made five saves while allowing a single goal.

York outshot UOIT 35-27 and both teams were 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

UOIT (4-18-1) will host the Laurier Golden Hawks (7-14-1) on Friday, January 27 at the Campus Ice Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
