Ridgebacks head out east for latest recruit
OSHAWA, Ont. – University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) men's hockey head coach Marlin Muylaert is proud to announce that Parker Deighan of Summerside, P.E.I. has committed to the Ridgebacks for the 2011-12 season.
“In our search for a quality puck moving defenseman, Parker jumped out at us as someone who possessed the skills to really help us in this area,” said Muylaert. “His performance this year in the Maritime Junior Hockey League was outstanding as he quarterbacked Summerside's championship season.”
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue to play hockey and at the same time work towards my degree in criminology,” said Deighan. “Coach Muylaert has had great success and I look forward to being a Ridgeback and competing at the university level. A special thanks to Pat (GM of the Western Capitals) and Gordie (Coach of the Capitals last year) for all the help getting to this point.”
Deighan has spent the last five seasons in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) playing for the Summerside Western Capitals. This past year, the Capitals won the Kent Cup (league championship), sweeping the Weeks Crushers 4-0 in the championship series. In the playoffs, Deighan recorded two goals and 16 assists, leading all defensemen in scoring. Seven of his 18 points came in the finals against the Crushers.
Deighan was also on the top of the scoring charts during the regular season as he led the league in scoring by a defenseman. In 49 games, he scored 12 goals and 57 assists to average 1.41 points per game. He was also no stranger to the physical game as he racked up 140 penalty minutes.
Following the regular season, Deighan was named a MHL first team all-star.
“Parker plays the game with a bit of an edge and can contribute to our physical presence as well,” said Muylaert. “We look forward to developing Parker's game while helping him succeed academically.”
In his career with the Caps, Deighan played in 206 games and scored 29 goals and 116 assists. He also spent 36 games in the QMJHL with the Prince Edward Island Rockets during the 2007-08 season.
Season tickets for the Ridgebacks are now on sale and available through the UOIT Athletic Department by phoning (905) 721-2000 ext. 2784 or by emailing scott.dennis@dc-uoit.ca .
