Ridgebacks shutout at Varsity arena

OUA Women’s Hockey: Toronto defeated UOIT 3-0

TORONTO – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team suffered their second loss of the weekend as they were shutout 3-0 by the Toronto Varsity Blues.

This is the first time that UOIT has been shutout in 12 games this season as they fall to 4-8-0 on the year. Toronto jumped up five spots in the standings with the win as they improve to 5-5-1. Three points separate fifth to tenth place in the OUA playoff race.

Toronto got off to a hot start as they scored back-to-back goals just over one minute apart in the first period. April Looije and Amanda Fawns scored for the Varsity Blues.

The score remained 2-0 heading into the third period, where the Ridgebacks threw everything they had at Toronto goaltender Nicole Kesteris. The Aurora native was up to the task as she stopped all 19 UOIT third period shots to preserve the shutout.

With the Ridgebacks on a power play with five minutes left in the game, senior Karolina Urban scored a shorthanded marker to seal the win for the Varsity Blues.

Kesteris made 39 saves for her first shutout of the season. Jessica Larabie (Pickering, Ont.) made 32 saves for UOIT in the loss. Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.

UOIT will look to get back in the win column next weekend when they take on the Ryerson Rams (1-10-0). Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is 3:30 p.m.
