Historic race for the Ridgebacks this weekend
WELLAND, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s rowing team is heading off to nationals this weekend as they are taking part in the Canadian University Rowing Association (CURA) national championship.
This marks the first time that any team from UOIT will be taking part in a national championship.
The two-day championship takes place at Welland International Flatwater Centre in Welland, Ont. on November 5-6, 2011.
UOIT will be entering the women’s heavyweight eight crew that qualified for the finals at the OUA championship this past week. The crew consists of Meaghan Jones, Allison Ng, Allison Demaiter, Sheila King, Angela Dares, Gillian Beckette, Christie Attwood, Kelsey Sargent and coxie Monica Mak.
Everyone in the program is looking forward to the new challenge, as this is the Ridgebacks first appearance at the CURA championship.
“The positive energy and dedication throughout the entire rowing team this year has propelled us to our best season yet,” said interim head coach Jenn Durward. “I am very proud to have these nine women representing UOIT in our debut at the Canadian University Championship. I am just as excited as the crew will be making UOIT rowing history! This is just the beginning of the exciting things we will see out of the rowing program over the next few years.”
The University of Western Ontario is hosting the event which is sanctioned by CURA, Rowing Canada Aviron and RowOntario. Time trials will take place on Saturday and the finals will be held on Sunday.
