Ridgebacks comeback attempt falls short

OUA Men’s Hockey: Brock defeated UOIT 5-3

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks dropped a 5-3 decision to Brock University in St. Catharines on Wednesday night in OUA men’s hockey action.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the third period, the Ridgebacks scored two quick goals to narrow the lead to just one, but their comeback effort fell just short as Brock skated away with a 5-3 victory.

UOIT is 3-13-0 this season and is three points out of a playoff spot in the OUA western conference. Brock improves to 7-8-1 and sits in fifth place.

After Brock opened up scoring on the power play in the first three minutes of the game, James Woodcroft scored his first career OUA goal for UOIT at the 8:19 minute mark to tie the game up. Andrew Randazzo and Jeremy Whelan recorded assists on the play.

Brock would retake the lead heading into the first intermission as senior Derek Brochu beat UOIT goalie Jason Guy for his third goal of the year.

The Badgers took control of the game in the second period outscoring UOIT 2-0 to take a 4-1 lead. Matt Abercrombie and CJ Dickson were the goal scorers for the Badgers.

In the final frame, UOIT got on the board quickly as Whelan scored a shorthanded goal 19 seconds into the period, with assists going to Steve Spade and Kyle Wetering. Whelan has six points in his five-game scoring streak.

UOIT defencemen Matt Pasztor scored on the power play to cut the lead to just one, but Brochu scored his second of the night with five minutes left on the clock to secure the win for Brock.

The Badgers were 3-for-9 with the man advantage while UOIT was 1-for-8. Final shots were 32-29 in favour of Brock.

UOIT’s next home game is on Friday, December 2 against the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-4-3). Fans in attendance will have a chance at winning Toronto Maple Leafs tickets in support of the Campus Food Drive.
