UOIT matches two team records in a win over Ryerson
OUA Women’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Ryerson 6-2
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks went on a scoring spree on Saturday as they defeated the Ryerson Rams 6-2 in OUA women’s hockey action.
The team tied two UOIT all-time records in the win - the largest margin of victory (four) and most goals in a game (six). Both records were originally set on November 1, 2008 when UOIT beat Queen’s by the same score.
Freshman Jennifer Daly (Ajax, Ont.) had a breakout game for the Ridgebacks scoring one goal and adding three assists in the win.
Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) helped the Ridgebacks get out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period as she scored two goals in the frame, her third and fourth of the year. The team’s leader in scoring last season also added an assist on Daly’s goal to cap off a three-point night.
Rikki Palmateer (Cobourg, Ont.), Breanne Hadley (Belleville, Ont.) and Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) were the other goal scorers for UOIT while Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Kara Carter (Whitby, Ont.) each had two assists in the win.
With nine goals this season, Morillo moves back into a tie for the lead in the OUA goal-scoring race. She sits third in total points with 14 on the year, as she trails two Queen’s Gaels.
Kyla Thurston and Jessica Hartwick were the goal scorers for Ryerson in the losing effort.
Jessica Larabie made 26 saves for UOIT as she recorded her second straight victory. The Pickering native has a .913 save percentage this season.
Final shots in the game were 45-28 in favour of the Ridgebacks.
This was the first time UOIT and Ryerson have matched up in OUA women’s hockey action.
The Ridgebacks (4-6-0) will take their two-game winning streak on the road next weekend as they take on Laurier (Saturday) and Toronto (Sunday).
