UOIT’s Jay Finley tied for sixth at the OUA Championship
KINGSTON - At the end of a windy round one at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club, Jay Finley of the UOIT Ridgebacks golf team sits in a tie for sixth place at the 2011 OUA Championship.
Finley shot a four-over 74 in round one and is three strokes behind Charles Fitzsimmons of Western who sits alone in first place after shooting an one-over 71. Finley is in elite company at the provincial championship as he is tied with Garrett Rank of Waterloo, who is the defending OUA champion and runner-up at the RCGA College/University championship.
Finley had a great back nine in round one as he recorded five pars and two birdies. The Oshawa native will look to continue his strong play in the tough conditions heading into the final round on Tuesday.
On the team leaderboard, the Ridgebacks sit in 13th place, two strokes ahead of Carleton and six strokes behind Laurentian.
Other Ridgeback individual results include Brendan Edwards (T48), Daniel Roccasalvo (T71), Evan Culbert (T78) and Joel Neal (80).
This is the first time in school history that UOIT has taken part in the OUA championship.
The final round of play will begin on Wednesday morning. Finley will look to become the first UOIT student-athlete to earn an OUA medal in an individual competition.
