Ridgebacks rowers put up good results at the Head of the Trent


PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The UOIT rowing team took part in the 41st running of the Head of the Trent on Saturday – North America’s largest single day regatta.

Rowers at this year’s regatta were faced with difficult water, wind and weather conditions drastically changing the racing times from years prior.
 
In the women’s heavyweight eight race, UOIT finished in seventh place with a time of 21:32.62. The team of Meghan Jones, Allison Ng, Angela Dares, Sheila King, Allison Demaiter, Gillian Beckette, Christie Attwood and Kelsey Sargent finished just one minute out of a podium finish.
 
The men’s heavyweight eight men finished with a time of 18.11.71 in sixth place overall. Colm Shannon, Nik Vantfoort, Justin Vanden Bosch, Scott Wilson, Will Hodgins, Mark Henein, Jeff Bonnallie and Pat Bradley made up the crew.
 
Also finishing in sixth place was the lightweight doubles team of Keith Kling and Rob Forderer. The crew finished the course with a time of 23:57.02, finishing ahead of five other University teams. The heavyweight doubles team of Znak Ovenden and Steve Fontana ran into a little trouble as they finished the course in 23:10.87 and in 13th place.
 
The women’s double team of Ashley Tompsett and Carly Valcheff raced later in the day and finished ahead of three University teams with a time of 20:18.61.
 
Both the men’s and women’s novice eight teams finished in tenth place in their respective races. The men’s division consisted of 17 boats and the women’s division had 19.
 
The team of Shelby Cohen, Emily Simpson, Anna Atanowski, Carly Drane, Angela Michalecki, Ana Robalino, Brelynne Kocela, Katelyn Hathaway and coxie Shea Brown finished with a time of 19:33.74.

The men’s crew consisted of Mackenzie Korb, Chris Bagshaw, Drew Eidt, Ryan Lisowski, Justin Hiller, Matthew Weeks, Andrew Bacchus, Bevan Rudanycz and coxie Ray Mutiger. The team had a time of 16:57.82, less than two minutes behind the winning crew from McGill.
