Morillo sets two UOIT school records in a big win over Western
OUA Women’s Hockey: UOIT defeated Western 5-3
OSHAWA, Ont. – Jill Morillo had a five-point performance in the UOIT Ridgebacks 5-3 victory over the Western Mustang’s on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre. The Whitby native set two UOIT records as she scored the most goals and points in a single game for the Ridgebacks women’s hockey program. The previous record of three goals and three points was set by Megan Steacy last season.
Morillo also extended her league leading point streak to six consecutive games as she leads the OUA in scoring with 11 points this season. She also leads the OUA in goals scored with seven on the season.
The Ridgebacks scored twice early in the game, as Morillo scored goals at the 1:55 and 2:33 mark of the first period.
Western’s Nina Mammolitti scored her first goal of the year with three minutes left in the first period to cut the Ridgebacks lead to just one.
Morillo would finish off the hat-trick five minutes into the second period as she roofed one past Western goalie Kelly Campbell. Western would bounce back with two quick goals, as Katherine Dillon and Tara Cation scored just three minutes apart midway through the second period to level the score.
With four minutes left in the second period, Kayla Jardine scored a power play marker for the Ridgebacks, giving UOIT a 4-3 lead. Morillo added an assist on the play.
With the Mustang’s pressing for the equalizer in the third stanza, Morillo capped off the five-point night with an empty net goal which secured the Ridgebacks their second win of the season.
Morillo and the Ridgebacks had a big cheering section at the game as Saturday afternoon was Whitby Girls Hockey Association day at the Campus Ice Centre.
Another former Whitby Wolves player Jessica Larabie had a solid game, making 32 saves in her first win of the year.
The Ridgebacks will now head out on the road next weekend for games against Laurier and Waterloo.
