Craven brothers lead UOIT to a tie in their season finale

OUA Men’s Soccer: UOIT tied Windsor 2-2
 
WINDSOR, Ont. – If Sunday’s men’s soccer game against Windsor is the last one in a UOIT uniform for Paul and Matt Craven, the twin brothers know how to go out in style as they each scored a goal in a Ridgebacks 2-2 draw.
 
Matt Craven (Oshawa, Ont.) opened up scoring just eight minutes into the game, putting one in the bottom right corner to give the Ridgebacks a 1-0 lead. It was Craven’s second goal this season.
 
Immediately following the Ridgebacks first goal, Lancer goalkeeper Dan Mendonca managed to come up with two big saves keeping the game within one.
 
Michael Pio would tie the game up at 1-1 ten minutes later, as he beat freshman goalkeeper Matt Caldaroni (Pickering, Ont.) for his seventh goal of the season.
 
Windsor took the lead in the 81st minute when Mike Watson found a seam in the UOIT defence and kicked one into the bottom left corner, making the score 2-1.
 
With pride on the line in the late stages of the game, UOIT was able to dig deep and score as Paul Craven shot one into the top corner of the Lancer goal in the 88th minute, making the final 2-2. This was Craven’s first goal of the season and the fifth of his OUA career.

Caldaroni made six saves in net for UOIT in the first half. Michael Heinrich came in net in the second half and made two big ones early on to keep the game tied at 1-1.
 
The Ridgebacks headed into the game coming off a 1-0 loss to the Western Mustangs on Saturday.
 
UOIT finishes the year with a 1-12-3 conference record (2-14-5 overall) while the Lancers and Mustangs are both heading to the playoffs.
 
The 2011 Ridgebacks squad was a completely different team from one season ago. UOIT’s defence drastically improved as they went from allowing 63 goals in 2010 to just 39 in 2011.
