Ridgebacks battle hard at the OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship
GUELPH, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s lacrosse team took part in the OUA championship this weekend hosted by the Guelph Gryphons. Although the team was unable to pick up a win, the team put forth a great effort and fought hard until the final whistle.
The Ridgebacks opened up the championship with a match against the second ranked and hosting Gryphons. Guelph came on strong and didn't let up the whole game and shutout UOIT to advance to the semi-finals. The Ridgebacks played well defensively and goaltender Tessa Lam was rewarded for her efforts as she was named the player of the game.
The Ridgebacks next opponent was the defending OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks, who were the third ranked team in the championship and had won six of the last seven OUA titles.
UOIT went stride for stride with the Golden Hawks during the first half, but Laurier pulled away in the second winning by a score of 18-4. Ashley Le Lievre led the Ridgebacks with two goals while Kelly Robinson and Tristen Cruickshank each had one.
Graduating player Kelly Robinson was named player of the game for her hard work in the attacking end for UOIT.
Western won the OUA championship with a 12-6 victory over Guelph in the finals.
