UOIT hangs tough with the top-ranked Golden Hawks

OUA Women’s Hockey – Laurier defeated UOIT 3-1

WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team had a solid effort on Saturday night against the No. 3 CIS ranked Laurier Golden Hawks but were unable to come up with a win they dropped a 3-1 decision on the road.

Trailing 2-0 in the third period, Vanessa Johnstone of Niagara Falls, Ont. scored for UOIT to cut the Laurier lead to one. The Golden Hawks would manage to hold off the charging Ridgebacks as they scored a shorthanded goal with six minutes left in the game to pick up their fifth straight win.

Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) and Jennifer Daly (Ajax, Ont.) had assists on Johnstone’s third goal of the year.

The third period goal was the lone bright spot for UOIT’s power play unit, as they went 1-for-8 with the man advantage with Laurier goalie Rachel Hamilton coming up with several key stops.

Jessica Larabie (Pickering, Ont.) had a good game in between the pipes for UOIT stopping 27 shots in the loss. Larabie has allowed just eight goals in her last three starts.

Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season, putting an end to her six game scoring streak.

Laurier is now 5-0-0 on the year while the Ridgebacks slip to 2-5-0.

UOIT will look to get a win in Waterloo on Sunday as they take on the 1-6 Warriors at 2 p.m.
