Ridgebacks lose their season opener at Brock

OUA Women’s Hockey: Brock defeated UOIT 5-2
 
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks dropped a 5-2 decision to the Brock Badgers Wednesday night in St. Catharines in their 2011/12 season opener.

UOIT got off to a great start as Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) opened the scoring 12:58 into the first period on the power play, with Jordan Whatley (Cobourg, Ont.) and Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) adding assists.

Brock would strike back with their own power play goal late in the period to tie things up at 1-1.

The Badgers would take a 2-1 lead under a minute gone in the second period, but UOIT would level the score at the 14:43 minute mark as Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) got her first of the season, with assists going to Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) and Jennifer Daly (Ajax, Ont.). With the assist, Morillo now has 40 points in her Ridgebacks career.
 
In the third period, the Badgers would score three goals on Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) who had stood on her head for the first 40 minutes. Brianne Veale, Leigh Vanderveen and Kristen Dewsbury were the goal scorers for Brock, securing the 5-2 home opener win.
 
Thompson made 30 saves in the loss, while Oshawa native Chantal Bicket stopped 21 in the win.
 
UOIT will travel to Guelph on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
