UOIT set to take on a NCAA frozen four finalist
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team is heading south of the border this weekend as they take on the Michigan Wolverines and the Bowling Green Falcons in preparation for the OUA regular season.
Saturday, October 1 (7:35 p.m.) vs. Michigan (Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan)
Michigan enters the 2011 season as one of the top teams in the CCHA as they are ranked third in the coaches and media polls. In the national polls, Michigan is ranked sixth overall.
Head Coach Red Berenson enters the season as the CCHA’s all-time leader in wins, having earned 497 career conference victories with U-M. Berenson ranks sixth on the NCAA all-time list with 728 wins and is 17 victories shy of Bob Peters for fifth place.
Michigan finished the 2010-11 campaign with a 29-11-4 record and its 11th CCHA regular season championship.
The Wolverines defeated Nebraska-Omaha, Colorado College and second-seeded North Dakota before falling to Minnesota-Duluth, 3-2 in overtime in the national championship game.
Michigan has competed in 21 consecutive NCAA Tournaments -- a national record -- dating back to 1991.
The Wolverines enter the 2011-12 season having won their last 14 games at Yost Arena. Michigan’s record for most consecutive home wins stands at 17, which has been done twice -- Jan. 1993 to Jan. 1994 and March 1961 to March 1962.
Members of the team were recently recognized by the league as Jon Merrill and David Wohlberg were named to the 2011-12 CCHA Preseason All-Conference Team.
Sunday, October 2 (4:05 p.m.) vs. Bowling Green Falcons (BGSU Ice Arena – Bowling Green, Ohio)
Bowling Green was defeated by the Wolverines in the second round of the CCHA tournament after defeating Northern Michigan University 2-1 in the first round.
The Falcons had a tough year as they were 3-21-4 in conference action and 10-27-4 overall.
Head coach Chris Bergeron is hoping to turn things around in 2011-12 entering the CCHA season. With nine freshman on the roster for Sunday’s game, the Falcons should have a new attitude as they look to get off to a good start to their season against the Ridgebacks.
