Olympic athlete coming to speak at UOIT

OSHAWA, Ont. – Jane Rumball, member of the Canadian National rowing team, will be sharing her rowing experiences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) on Thursday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to have Jane speak at UOIT,” said Rob Millikin, head coach of UOIT varsity rowing team. “She is accomplished in the sport of rowing and it will be a great experience for everyone who comes out to talk with this great athlete.”

Rumball, a native of Fredericton, NB, was the Stroke Oar of the fourth place Canadian women's eight crew at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Throughout her rowing career, she has enjoyed success on the world rowing circuit having competed at a number of high caliber events. A major highlight in her career came in 2006, where she won gold at the World Rowing Championship in the women's coxless pairs with partner Darcy Marquardt. She also won the bronze medal in the women’s eight at the 2008 Lucerne World Cup.

Rumball’s life has been fast paced since she started rowing. She is currently in her second year of medical school at University of Toronto and is training again to be with the national team for the 2012 Olympic. With a major focus on her education, she intends to complete as much as she can for her schooling before taking a year off.

Interim Canadian women’s coach, Al Morrow, explains that Rumball is a product of hard work and even though she did not make the world teams in 2004 or 2005, she made it in 2006 as a world champion. Morrow also says Rumball has an outstanding characteristic because of her incredible balance in life and her story is the one to love.
