Ridgebacks pullout a comeback win over York

Men’s Hockey: UOIT defeated York 3-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – Jeff Barletta of the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team picked a great time to record his first OUA goal as he scored at the 18:48 mark of the third period to complete a 3-1 comeback win over York University on Saturday night.

With the win, UOIT ( 9-14-1) moves into a tie with the Brock Badgers (9-15-1) for the eighth and final playoff position in the OUA Western Conference. UOIT has one game in hand on the Badgers with four games remaining in the regular season.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the third period on Saturday night, Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) broke the York shutout to tie the game at 1-1. TJ Legge (Chapleau, Ont.) and Scott Baker (Mactiar, Ont.) picked up assists on the play.

With just over a minute left on the clock and overtime looming, Barletta riffled home the game wining goal from the slot, beating York goalie David Blair in the top corner. Dustin Turner (Charolettown, PEI) and Brent Varty (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up the assists on the play.

With the crowd still celebrating Barletta’s goal, Baker put the game on ice as he netted an empty net goal to give UOIT a 3-1 victory.

UOIT would go on to outshoot York 33-26, including 14-8 in the third period. Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) was fantastic in net for UOIT stopping 25 of 26 York shots. Blair stopped 30 UOIT shots for York in the losing effort.

Both power play units were shutout on the night as UOIT went 0-for-8 and York was 0-for-4.

The Ridgebacks will travel north next weekend as they have back-to-back games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay. The Ridgebacks return to the Campus Ice Centre on Friday, February 12 and welcome the Western Mustangs to Oshawa.
