Ridgebacks fall in OT to Queen’s

Women’s Hockey: Queen’s defeated UOIT 4-3 (OT)

KINGSTON, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team scored two goals in the final minutes of regulation against Queen’s University to force overtime, but the Ridgebacks fell short in overtime as the Gaels picked up a 4-3 victory.

The Gaels looked to have the game under control when they scored for two goals 73 seconds apart midway through the third period. However, a flurry of late penalties left the Gaels shorthanded and UOIT’s Jill Morillo ( Whitby, Ont.) capitalized on the power play with 1:58 left in the third to get the Ridgebacks within one. Morillo added her second of the game with 57 seconds left in regulation to even the score at 3-3, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Michelle Hunt of Queen’s scored her first career goal at 2:04 minute mark to give the Gaels the victory. 

Morillo’s pair of goals moves her back to the top of the OUA freshman scoring chart with 20 points this season. She also leads all freshmen in goals with 13 on the year.

UOIT`s Jessica Larable was busy in net facing 39 shots and stopping 35 of them in a losing cause. Queen’s goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher stopped 29 of 32 shots.
 
Queen`s took the front end of the double header with UOIT on Saturday and look to sweep the season series with the Ridgebacks on Sunday. The Gael`s will face the Ridgebacks on Sunday, January 31 at the Memorial Center (2:30 p.m.).
