Ridgebacks excited about the addition of a local OHL veteran goaltender

Oshawa, Ont. – The UOIT athletic department and men’s hockey head coach Marlin Muylaert is proud to announce that Whitby native Jason Guy has committed to play for the Ridgebacks for 2009-10 hockey season.

Guy is coming off four year career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing for the Guelph Storm, Kingston Frontenacs and most recently the London Knights.

"I am excited that Jason has chose to pursue his studies at UOIT and play for the Ridgebacks,” commented Muylaert. “Jason was a much sought after student-athlete and his abilities will certainly be an asset for our program".

Appearing in 109 regular season games and seven playoff matches in the OHL, Guy has plenty of big game experience between the pipes. He has a career record of 47-48-4-2 during the regular season while recorded four shutouts. Playing for the London Knights over the past two years, Guy posted a record of 18-7-1-1 with a goals against average (GAA) of 3.18.

In 19 games with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) this past year, Guy recorded 673 saves with a 3.21 GAA with a .919 save percentage. His record with Newmarket was 10-5-2-1.

The addition of the young netminder is good news for Muylaert heading into the third year of Ridgebacks hockey in the OUA. The team looked impressive down the stretch last years as they had a .500 record in 2009 while earning UOIT team of the year honours at the athletic banquet this past month. Muylaert also recorded his 200th career win as a head coach in the CIS this past season.

Muylaert is hoping that this years’ recruiting class can make as big of a splash as last season’s did with Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) receiving provincial recognition as members of the OUA All-Rookie team. Vatri also received top honours winning the OUA West Region Rookie of the Year award.

Guy has been accepted to UOIT for the 2009-10 academic year and eagerly waiting for training camp to begin in September.
