UOIT Novice Rowing 2012-2013
If you have NEVER RACED in a rowing event; high school, club or university,
you are eligible to try out for the novice rowing program.
If you are interested in rowing novice for the Fall 2012 season, here are a few things that you need to consider:
- Novice information meeting:
- will tentatively be Thursday, September 6, 2012. Time and location will be announced at a later date. You will be required to watch the Rowing Canada Safety Video before you are allowed on the water, this will be shown right after the information meeting.
- Time Commitment:
- 5-6 mornings a week, at the Durham Rowing Club, Port Perry. Approx 20min drive north of campus.
- 5:15 AM practice time
- Regattas (races) are on the weekends, the schedule is posted
- Cost:
- DRC membership fees: approx $340 (based on 2011 fees, which are subject to change February 2012)
- $250 athletic gear, please see Adopt a Ridgeback Program for details, or contact Scott Barker, UOIT Athletic Coordinator (Scott.Barker@dc-uoit.ca).
- UOIT Rowing Program fee (to be determined based on 2011 fees)
- Team Selection Process:
- General fitness selection: 500m sprint on the ergometer (rowing machine) and 2KM run. Due to the short season, a fitness /sport background will help your chances through the selection process.
- After the 2km run and 500m sprint, the first round of cuts will be made. Those making it through the fitness selection will be invited to the on water training selection.
- The novice team roster will be a maximum of 12 men and 12 women, not including coxswains.
**Participation in a Learn to Row program at a local Club near your home town is an asset. Please see www.rowontairo.ca for details on local clubs near you.
