2010-11 Award Winners

Men’s Rowing

jbonnalieRookie of the Year – Jeff Bonnalie

My name if Jeff Bonnallie, I am a 1st year kinesiology student here at UOIT and I aim to graduate in 2014 with a BHSc. When I was first accepted to UOIT I decided I was going to take advantage of the opportunity to try out for the rowing team. I have always had an interest in this sport and it is a great way to stay active while in school. In my next 3 years at UOIT I plan to row with the men's lightweight varsity crew. My first year with the rowing program allowed me to meet a lot of great people and gain amazing new experiences. I could not have asked for a better crew to row with each morning and I cant wait for next season.

jvandenboschLeadership – Justin Vanden Bosch

I started rowing at UOIT 3 years ago to get more out of my university experience.  After my first day on the water I've never looked back.  In the future I would like to continue rowing and compete on a provincial and national level.  I am currently in 4th year Automotive engineering and hope to continue with a masters in engineering management.

MVP – Scott Wilson

A few years ago now my dad and I came into the school to pay my tuition and we saw a poster for rowing. He mentioned that people my height were good at it so I thought "hey, if there's a sport where being part giraffe is advantageous and doesn't involve a basketball, I'm in." Plus I've been surfing since I could locate an Ocean on a map so I had been looking for another water sport to fill the time (Not many waves in Southern Ontario). I've been hooked ever since. I love it too much to ever stop voluntarily so I guess I'll just keep training and see where it takes me.

As for school, I'm just finishing up my commerce degree, but rowing has gotten me really interested in health and fitness, so I'll likely be coming back in the fall to start another degree in Kinesiology. But more importantly I'll be coming back in the fall to row again with my favorite people.

Academic Award (top academic in rowing) – Karsten Kudermann (exchange student)

Women’s Rowing

Rookie of the Year – Angela Dares

adares I got into rowing because of my sister, who has now been rowing for 3 years. After transferring back home to UOIT, I decided to give it a shot and go out for the team with some great results. I would like to contribute to a solid history of rowing over my career with UOIT. If i continue to develop my skills then rowing at the national level would be amazing. But for now it's onto another OUA medal!

After my undergrad I would like to go to Chiropractic College or to do physiotherapy. Ultimately I would like to own a practice in my respective field. When I was coming out for the rowing team there was a lot of self doubt and questioning whether I would even make the team. After endless encouragement from my sister I completed the selection camp, was granted the honour of being stroke seat (as my sister was), and achieved two awards from the university athletics.

I would like to share these awards with my crew (novice 8 boat) and my sister, all of which whom have supported and encouraged me along the way.

mmak Coxswain of the Year – Monika Mak

I joined the rowing team because my roommate did, and our schedules worked out better that way. I also liked the swag! I plan to continue coxing for the rowing team until I graduate, and maybe row as well if I can grow 6 inches in the next couple of years. I plan to graduate from Life Science and Management, then do some post graduate studies. Or I'll be in Africa, stalking lions in a jeep!!

cattwood

Leadership – Christie Attwood

I began rowing when I came to UOIT, as at the time they did not offer any of the sports that I played. Being an athlete in high school, I definitely wanted to get involved and be apart of a tea; a lot of my family members had also rowed so I figured I would try it out!

I would like to one day help coach the UOIT Rowing Team, as well as work in athletics after finishing my degree in 2012.

ldares

MVP – Lauren Dares

It's funny, but I joined rowing in my second year at UOIT because we didn't have a women's soccer team at that time. I couldn't skate and didn't have the hand-eye coordination for tennis, so rowing was the only option left! I've always enjoyed water sports, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm really glad I did, because after my 3 years on the team, I've come to love the sport and I'm definitely in the best shape of my life. As far as future plans go, I just want to keep improving on my past results, both on the erg and on the water, and we'll see where that takes me! I'm hoping to make the rowing team at Trent University next year as I'll be there in the fall working on a Master's degree in Environmental and Life Sciences. My future plans for school are to complete graduate school and look into doing a Ph.D. in biology in the next few years. I've had a great time with UOIT rowing and it's a bittersweet goodbye for me, as this year was definitely the first step towards great things to come for the program. Good luck to everyone next season, and I'll see you all on the water!

sgaleaAcademic Award (top academic in rowing) – Shannon Galea

My name is Shannon Galea and I am completing my degree in the Bachelor of Education program at UOIT. I have had the greatest opportunity to continue my varsity career after graduating from McMaster and pursuing the new sport of rowing. This year as a Women’s Novice rower, we accomplished placing 1st in two regattas and finishing with a season’s best in the OUA finals with a bronze. As the secretary for the Varsity Rowing Executive, I currently have had the greatest opportunity in becoming heavily involved with organizing events for the team and program development for young rowers. Although my main area of expertise in athletics is softball as a Quest for Gold athlete, rowing has been complimentary to my training in the off season. Consequently, UOIT has provided me the opportunity to coordinate a Women’s Flag Football league with athletes from DC and UOIT as a varsity initiative. I was also very fortunate to representing UOIT at the OUA Squash Championships in March and couldn’t be more thankful for a fantastic experience in such a short period of time. During my search as a future educator, I look forward to coaching at UOIT in the upcoming season as well as developing a rowing program for the local Durham highschools in a competitive and recreational stream.
