TIME COMMITMENT AND FITNESS EXPECTATIONS (rowing season from August 30th to November 6th. 2010

    Punctuality-Dependability

    • Success in rowing and the success of your team require your commitment.  Failure to attend a practice or worse to attend a regatta is extremely detrimental to the success of your team. If you do not have the capability or the absolute commitment to attend every practice and every regatta, then rowing with UOIT is not for you.
    • Based on past experience and difficulties created by failure of team members to show up on time to practices, there is a policy of no tolerance for lateness or missing a training practice .  Attendance is recorded at every practice.
      • miss one practice or late one time the Crew coach will talk to you.
      • miss two practices, or late twice and the Head Coach talks to you.
      • miss three practices, or late three times, you will no longer be on the team. There are no refunds for any fees paid if this happens.
    • You are expected as part of a crew, to attend all of the water training sessions, to take 2k ergometer test, (scheduled throughout the season) and run at least 2k daily each week to evaluate and maintain physical stamina
    • Winter and Summer training programs are mandatory. Strength and Conditioning Programs operate four times per week, at the Fitness and Wellness Centre, throughout the winter season. We recommend that you attend at least two of these formal sessions, in addition to training on your own. A documented individual training program will be provided to each rowing team athlete for winter training. Sessions will start in early January and conclude at the end of the school academic year.
    • Training support via email will be provided throughout the summer months prior to the training camp.
      • It is each athlete's individual responsibility to take advantage of the fitness and training advice and support available and  arrive at the Rowing Camp in August in a state of good to excellent physical fitness.

Your Education: We expect you to maintain your academic average. Failure to do so may result in the Athletic Department advising us that you are no longer eligible to row varsity for the University.

    • Your ability to manage rowing with you other priorities will depend on your time management skills.
    • For most school assignments and exams you are given ample notice by your professors, We provide you with a complete schedule of practices and regattas for the season at the beginning to provide an opportunity to resolve any conflicts. It is  your  responsibility to discuss all potential conflicts with the teaching and coaching staff  at the beginning of the season  not the day before the championship regatta!
    • We expect that you will try to arrange your lectures, exams, projects etc, as much as possible around the rowing schedule during the fall rowing season.  We know from past experience that this can be done, make your sport known early to your professors, and teaching assistants.
    • If you cannot make this type of commitment, then this sport is not for you.

    For Novice Rowers:
For the novices, the boats will be determined after your fitness camp. We expect you to come into camp in physical condition to row.  We recommend that you take part in the winter training and participate in training or rowing regime during the summer. Initially you will be cautioned on the factors of punctuality and dependability and how crucial they are to a successful training program.

    Travel by Bus:
Once a rower boards the bus, at UOIT, until the bus drops the rower off, at UOIT, you will travel as a group.  Because you represent UOIT, you must be in your team uniform, whenever you leave the bus, be it at the regatta site or when you leave the bus for refreshments. Whenever the bus stops for refreshments, you will all go into one eating establishment, arranged by the Coach in charge.

Once at the regatta site you must stay on the site unless a Coach approves a limited absence from the site.  (To eat/visit with parents etc.)  You must be available to help other crews rig and derig the boats, load and unload the boats, etc. and be available to race or cox in another boat in the event of mix ups etc.
The bus trips are part of the team/crew bonding process and are an essential part of the team building process.  The coaches use this time for regatta briefings, and debriefing issues.  They also use this time to ensure that all team/crew members are present.

Travel Waivers : (permission to travel by pmv to and from regattas)
Rowers are expected to travel to and from the regattas on the team bus. Due to past problems and abuses, unless there are very, very extenuating circumstances involved, no travel waivers will be issued. No meal allowances will be paid to those who are not on the bus.

Uniforms and Player packages will be made available at Varsity 101 which is a mandatory orientation session for all UOIT athletes’ held in early September.

All varsity and novice candidates are encouraged to seek out their local rowing club and to train prior to coming to camp in August. Varsity candidates should try and row competitively in the summer.  Novices train with a club, but do not enter a sanctioned regatta, if you do, you jeopardize your status as a novice.  In short if you row in a competitive sanctioned regatta you are no longer considered a novice.  You will be in the varsity candidate pool..

All members of the UOIT Varsity Rowing Team also are members of the Durham Rowing Club, and governed by the Standard Operating Procedures of the DRC. The equipment used is the property of the Durham Rowing Club so take care of it .  By agreement with the DRC, the base membership fee for a UOIT student is $130; This fee is under review year and is subject to change.  You will be advised of the details at the selection camp in August.
